A little corner of the internet. With a taskbar.

A home for my work, half-formed ideas, and things I learn the hard way. Please make yourself at home. You can change the operating system.

You have found my website. Congratulations on making it past the boot screen.

I wanted somewhere to put the things that don't fit neatly into a job title. The things I build, the questions I get stuck on, the occasional opinion that survives being written down.

So, welcome to prathyum.com. There is a taskbar. This was a personal decision, and I will be taking no further questions on it.

Why this place exists

A résumé is useful, but it gives you the labels and leaves out most of the person. A social profile gives you a box to type into, then politely suggests you become a content strategy.

I wanted a place I could keep adding to as my interests changed. Somewhere a finished project and a slightly questionable experiment could live next door to each other. Somewhere I could explain what interested me without first making it sound like a professional achievement.

Some things here will be useful. Some will exist because I wanted to see whether I could make them work. I think that's a perfectly respectable reason to build something.

Yes, you can change the operating system

The site borrows its manners from old desktop computers: window borders, title bars, a little boot sequence. Even getting lost has a theme. The 404 page is a blue screen, which is probably the most relaxed I've ever been about seeing one.

You can switch between Windows, Mac, and Linux looks, with light and dark options. The little labels change along with them. Pick the computer you remember, or the one you wish you'd had.

There is no correct choice.

Gyan, now with room for whole sentences

Gyan is where the writing lives. Things I've learned, things I'm trying to understand, and things I may eventually have to write a correction to.

The old site had a small quote box called “Gyan for the day” quoting Mewtwo's quotes. This version gives the idea more room. Quoting someone wise is efficient; explaining your own thinking is considerably less comfortable. That seems like a good reason to do it.

Expect some engineering, some AI, and whatever else refuses to leave my head until I write it down. There is no posting schedule. I have decided against giving my hobbies a middle manager.

You can ask the website questions

“Ask Prathyum” lets you ask about my work and the things I've published here. It looks through the site's material and points you to sources, so you can follow an answer back to the writing behind it.

Useful if you've arrived with a question and don't fancy opening every page to find the relevant paragraph.

It is meant to admit (hopefully) when the material doesn't support an answer. I already have enough opinions; the website doesn't need to invent more on my behalf.

Have a look around

Work has the projects. Experiments has room for the “what happens if…” ideas. About provides the human context behind all these windows.

I want this place to become more interesting as I keep making things and finding better questions. A few pages will probably age badly. I'll leave myself the option of changing my mind in public.

For now, make yourself at home. Read something. Ask something. Try a different theme purely because you can.

Welcome :)
